Oxford and Cambridge Universities plan to almost triple their fees to £9,000, the maximum allowed, by autumn next year. The universities will also be charging the maximum for this autumn, £3,375.
Families earning below £25,000 will pay £6,000 and receive a maintenance bursary of up to £1,625, but this reduction will be tapered to zero when the family income exceeds £42,000. It is feared that even with discounted fees, students from low-income families will not be able to afford to attend the Universities.
