Plagiarism to be CrossChecked
23rd June 2008
A US-based non-profit association, CrossRef, has recently created a 20 million-strong database of academic papers. This is intended to be a formidable deterrent for plagiarists, as previously plagiarism was difficult to notice in its entirety. A reportedly high amount of plagiarism at Higher Education level in the past has led to concerns over the credibility of essays and exams, but this marks a step in the right direction against academic thievery.
The database (named CrossCheck) works by putting academic’s submissions through the database, which states if there are any matches within the piece with published papers. The need of a plagiarism tool was identified as a top priority by CrossRef members in 2006 and as a result CrossRef researched the best plagiarism tools on the market to provide a solution.
