£67 million funding for Cambridge research lab

It has been announced that the Medical Research Council has received £67 million government funding towards a new £197 million building for the Laboratory of Molecular Biology (LMB) in Cambridge. The balance is to be provided by the MRC and includes the capital generated as a result of the commercialisation of discoveries made at LMB.
According to John Denham, the secretary of Cambridge University, the money is to help expand and redevelop the Laboratory of Molecular Biology (LMB) of which it will cost £200 million in total to rebuild.
The university is to contribute at least £7.5 million in return for the lease of space to accommodate 40 research workers. The construction of the new lab is scheduled to start later this year and is expected to be completed in three years.
The new building is to provide facilities for the top scientists working at LMB and to ensure the institute continues to excel globally. According to Sir Leszek Borysiewicz, MRC chief executive, “the Laboratory of Molecular Biology has an outstanding track record as an innovator in medical research. The new building will allow the MRC to build on the LMB’s position as a globally competitive research centre and continue to attract the best researchers.”
The University of Cambridge is at the forefront of international biochemical and clinical research and the new LMB will further enhance its reputation. The MRC was established in 1947 and the institutes scientists have since won a total of 13 Nobel prizes.
